Pigumi
Pigumi
Pigumi is a little elephant.
Before she even had the chance to discover the world, she passed away.
After becoming a spirit, Pigumi had no idea where she was supposed to go. She didn’t understand why, unlike before, no one could see her, touch her, or give her a warm hug anymore.
And so, she began to wander aimlessly through the streets and alleyways of Japan, beneath the soft glow of streetlights, embarking on a journey whose destination she didn’t even know.
Because Pigumi was so young when she passed away, there were still so many things she didn’t understand. She couldn’t understand why humans cried, or why some people kept smiling at others even when their hearts were breaking.
She loved watching people on the streets. The glowing lights of convenience stores, cherry blossoms drifting around corners, and strangers walking home alone late at night all filled her with wonder. Sometimes, she even forgot that she was no longer among the living. She would innocently follow people into shops or lift her little trunk to sniff the delicious food she could never taste.
Sadly, she couldn’t touch a single thing.
But Pigumi never got angry. She would simply tilt her head and continue exploring a world that was both strange and beautiful to her. Even though Pigumi had become a ghost, she still had a very kind heart.
Whenever she saw someone quietly crying on a street corner, she would stay beside them in silence. When a lost child couldn’t find the way home, she would gently guide them toward a familiar street. When an exhausted office worker walked home alone late at night, she would follow quietly behind until she knew they had arrived safely.
Sometimes, she would use her tiny ghostly powers to stop an umbrella from blowing away or send a lost object rolling back toward its owner.
No one ever knew who was behind these little miracles. They simply felt that, somehow, their day had become a little luckier. And whenever Pigumi saw someone she had helped smile again, her little tail would wiggle with happiness. It was her favorite thing to do on her endless journey.
But when night fell and the streets grew quiet, Pigumi sometimes felt lonely, too. She watched families walking home hand in hand, children resting beside their parents, and people embracing one another before saying goodbye.
She didn’t know what she had once possessed, nor did she fully understand what it meant to be dead. She only had a faint feeling that she had forgotten something very important.
Sometimes, she would look up at the night sky and whisper, “Where am I supposed to go?”
Of course, no one could answer her.
So Pigumi continued to wander. Learning about the world, one little discovery at a time, while helping the people who crossed her path. Perhaps one day, she would finally find the place where she belonged. But until that day came, she wanted to make the world just a little kinder.
